How it works

The names are shuffled fairly, then dealt out one at a time, like cards, so team sizes differ by at most one. With 13 names in 3 teams, you get teams of 5, 4 and 4.

Random teams in Excel

In Excel 365, shuffle the list with SORTBY and RANDARRAY, then wrap it into teams with WRAPROWS. With names in A2:A13 and 3 teams:

=WRAPROWS(SORTBY(A2:A13,RANDARRAY(ROWS(A2:A13))),3,"")

Each row is then one round of picks: the first column is Team 1, the second Team 2, and so on. Press F9 to reshuffle.

Frequently asked questions

Is it really random?

Yes. It uses your browser’s secure random number generator, and every possible order is equally likely.

Can I keep certain people apart?

Not automatically. Shuffle until you’re happy with the result, or split those people into separate lists.

Is my list saved?

No. Everything happens in your browser, and nothing is sent or stored.
