How to Create a PowerPoint Presentation With ChatGPT

ChatGPT can write the VBA code that builds a presentation for you. Paste the code into PowerPoint, run it, and the slides appear in seconds. Designer then adds the layouts.

Step 1: Ask ChatGPT for the code

Open ChatGPT and enter a prompt like this:

Provide the VBA code to generate a PowerPoint presentation about the holiday experience in Italy. There should be at least seven slides.

ChatGPT replies with the code and how to run it. Copy the code.

Step 2: Run it in PowerPoint

  1. Open PowerPoint with a Blank Presentation.
  2. Press Alt + F11 to open the VBA editor (or Developer → Visual Basic).
  3. Choose Insert → Module and paste the code. Close the editor.
  4. Press Alt + F8, select the macro and click Run.

A seven-slide presentation is built straight away.

Step 3: Add a design

Select a slide and click Designer on the Home tab. It suggests layouts that match each slide’s content; click one to apply it. Press F5 to start the slideshow.

A short sample macro

To see how it works before you ask ChatGPT, this builds a seven-slide outline with one title per slide:

Sub MakeDeck()
    Dim t, i
    t = Array("Holiday in Italy", "Rome", "Florence", _
        "Venice", "Amalfi Coast", "Italian Food", "Travel Tips")
    For i = 0 To 6
        With ActivePresentation.Slides.Add(i + 1, _
            IIf(i = 0, ppLayoutTitle, ppLayoutText))
            .Shapes(1).TextFrame.TextRange.Text = t(i)
        End With
    Next
End Sub

Things to know

  • The more detail you put in the prompt (slide titles, bullet points, audience), the better the deck.
  • If the code shows an error, paste the error message back into ChatGPT and ask it to fix the code.
  • You don’t need to save the file as .pptm unless you want to keep the macro. Save the finished deck as a normal .pptx.
  • Some AI tools can now create the .pptx file directly with no code. See creating a presentation with Claude.
